With almost 9 km of soft, golden sand to choose from, the whole of Porto Santo's beach is undeniably impressive, but the widest and most enticing stretch can be found at the island's western end, close to the small settlement of Cabeço da Ponta. It is here that the Aparthotel Luamar is situated, with its attractive garden and terraces leading directly onto the beach.
Consisting of just over 75 one-bedroom apartments arranged in a low-rise horseshoe shape around a large swimming pool, the Luamar is the perfect holiday choice for families and anyone else looking for spacious self-catering accommodation, but with the added convenience of all the services of a hotel. Simply but attractively furnished, each apartment consists of a twin bedroom, a separate living room with a pull-out sofa bed for the third and fourth person, an open plan kitchenette (with two ring hob microwave and fridge) and a bathroom. All have direct-dial telephones and satellite TV, and each has a balcony or terrace, with sea views available on request at a supplement.
Whilst the apartments are equipped for basic self-catering, a complimentary buffet breakfast - served until 10.30am - is included in the holiday price. A small mini-market and a little shop selling post cards and beach goods can be found on site. Another useful feature for families is the provision of a launderette. For any other needs, the aparthotel runs a courtesy bus to Vila Baleira (approximately 4 km away) four times a day, or you may of course make use of the public bus service, inexpensive local taxis, or perhaps hire a bicycle.
Those who wish to keep fit will find a small gym, but surely the most appealing form of exercise here is to enjoy long walks along the beach or a bracing swim in the Atlantic Ocean. For those who prefer freshwater swimming, or for days when the sea is a little rough, the large swimming pool is a more than adequate alternative, and a pool bar is on hand to serve light refreshments, so it requires no effort at all to spend sunny days in blissful idleness.
