Aparthotel Paúl do Mar

Madeira and Porto SantoSouth-West Madeira › Paúl do Mar

These comfortable studios stand in an unpretentious fishing village in Madeira's south-western corner, one of the sunniest spots on the island, and boast an excellent partially covered swimming pool.

One of the remarkable things about Madeira is that even in the most unspoilt, out-of-the-way places, you can find accommodation of an excellent modern standard. The Aparthotel Paúl do Mar is a prime example. Fronted by a long, rocky beach and backed by rugged, towering cliffs, the unpretentious fishing village of Paúl do Mar is a real backwater and is about as "un-touristy" a place as you could wish to find, with life focused firmly on the fishing harbour, the church and the local school. Yet follow the narrow seafront road right down to the end, and you will suddenly find this smart new property, comprising 60 spacious studios which combine the flexibility of self-catering accommodation with the facilities and comforts of a four-star hotel.

Stylishly furnished, each studio has twin beds, a small sitting area (some have a sofa bed for a third person), a very smart kitchenette and a modern en suite bathroom. All have air-conditioning, direct dial telephone, safety deposit box, satellite television and hairdryers, and each has a private balcony with splendid ocean views. Although the studios are equipped for self-catering (with a two-ring hob, a microwave oven and a fridge), buffet breakfast can be pre-booked and meals during the day and evening are also available, for those who simply like to use their kitchens for making the odd cup of tea. Another couple of restaurants can be found approximately 15 minutes walk away in the village centre, where there is also a local mini-market.

Being situated in the south-western corner of Madeira, Paúl do Mar makes an excellent base for those keen on exploring the spectacular landscapes of the island's western end, so we have included a hire car in the cost of your holiday here. Nature lovers will also find a wealth of rewarding footpaths and levada walks in the immediate vicinity, and the panoramic views enjoyed from the surrounding cliffs alone make it worth packing a pair of sturdy walking boots in your luggage.

After an energetic ramble, you can soothe tired muscles in the steam room or enjoy an invigorating swim in the excellent heated swimming pool, which has linked indoor and outdoor sections. The outside section is surrounded by a large terrace with plenty of sunloungers, so sunny days - of which this corner of the island has more than its fair share - can be whiled away in unashamed idleness.
