Standing in a residential area on a hillside above the old town, these popular apartments built in the grounds of an old banana plantation offer comfortable self-catering accommodation with lovely views over Funchal.

Set in a residential district on the hillside above the old town with views of the harbour and ocean beyond, Quinta Mãe dos Homens combines an attractive banana plantation with modern self-catering accommodation as well as the luxury of a swimming pool (heated by solar panels).

The Quinta has been in the same family since the 18th century and the current generation resides in the manor house overseeing the property they have converted from the original farm buildings. Pathways weave between the bananas and the buildings encouraging an air of rural tranquillity and making it hard to believe that the centre of Funchal with all its bustle is just a fifteen minute walk below. The local bus into town stops just 10 metres from the gates, but most guests enjoy the downhill stroll to the old town in the evenings for dinner in one of the many atmospheric restaurants and then treat themselves to a taxi for the steep climb back up. For basic grocery shopping there are a few local shops just a short stroll away.

The extensive pool terrace, amply furnished with sunbeds and umbrellas and a cosy wicker furnished clubroom cum library makes a cool and peaceful retreat. In addition there is a dining room with an open fireplace where barbecues and buffets, to be enjoyed on the terrace, are occasionally prepared. Breakfast is also offered for a small local charge.

There are 16 one bedroom apartments split between two blocks and in the newer block there are also 8 studios. The furnishings vary slightly but all have good facilities including telephones and cable televisions, bathrooms with full baths and kitchenettes with toasters and kettles and either a hob and microwave. (one bedroom apartments in the older block have an oven). All the studios and apartments have twin beds and the apartments also have a convertible sofa bed in the lounge suitable for one adult or two children. All have terraces or balconies, most with views over the rooftops towards the ocean.
