Madeira and Porto SantoSouth-West Madeira › Estreito de Calheta

Surrounded by woodland and unspoilt countryside, this very pretty rural hotel will suit keen walkers and those seeking complete rest and relaxation.

Perched high above the coast amidst fragrant pine and eucalyptus forests, Atrio is the ultimate rural hideaway in south-western Madeira. With just 10 individually decorated bedrooms, arranged around a beautiful courtyard, there is a really intimate and relaxing atmosphere, and the hotel's owners are on hand to help guests make the most of this enchanting setting.

Atrio is the creation of Emmanuelle Rall, a charming French lady who scoured the width and breadth of Madeira in her search for the perfect spot in which to realise her dream of building a stylish yet informal country retreat. All around there is wonderful terrain for walkers, and she can advise you on some of the nearby beauty spots that can easily be reached on foot, or our representative can arrange a local guide . The hotel's tranquil situation is equally suited to complete rest and relaxation, unwinding by the dark-tiled swimming pool and contemplating the stunning views is.

The rooms are prettily furnished, and have central heating, a small fridge, tea/coffee making facilities, satellite TV, hairdryers, and modern en suite bathrooms with either a shower or a bath. All are decorated differently, with either twin or double beds, but each has a spacious furnished terrace or balcony with lovely views down to the distant ocean (please note that smoking is not permitted inside the bedrooms).

Atrio is situated halfway between the villages of Prazeres and Estreito de Calheta, so when you can tear yourself away from this rural idyll there are a number of restaurants and basic shops within a 10-minute drive. Just a little further is the seaside village of Calheta proper, with its small man made sandy beach and an extremely well-stocked supermarket, as well as a couple of popular fish restaurants. The coastal villages of Jardim do Mar and Paúl do Mar, the stunning Rabaçal valley, the high plateau of Paúl da Serra and the island's western tip at Ponta do Pargo are other local attractions that lie within half-an-hour's drive.

Days at Atrio start with a continental buffet breakfast offering a selection of hams and cheeses, homemade cakes and preserves, fresh juice, yoghurt and cereals. Snacks are available throughout the day for those who wish to relax in the beautiful gardens, and picnic baskets can be arranged for those who wish to explore by car or on foot. In the evenings, light meals can be provided in the cosy restaurant, if they are pre-ordered that morning, perhaps followed by a drink from the honesty bar around the fireplace in the library area.

Please note that Credit Cards are not accepted at Atrio.
