Set just outside the relaxed beach resort of Bali, these well-equipped apartments were attractively designed in local stone, giving them a traditional appearance.

The village of Bali, stunningly set in a deep fold in the mountains as they drop down to sea midway between Rethymnon and Heraklion, has long been a popular spot for Crete’s summer visitors. In the three steeply sided bays that form the main part of the village there are a number of apartments and small hotels, in addition to the usual seafront tavernas, cafés and general stores. We have always felt that despite the dramatic setting, the accommodation in the village itself may be a little too hemmed-in, so we were extremely pleased when we were introduced to the owner of the Stone Village Apartments.

These new apartments have been meticulously constructed using predominantly stone and wood following traditional architectural plans and therefore blend well with the natural hillside surroundings. In addition to the large indoor reception area and seasonal restaurant there is a communal barbecue area, a playground and a small swimming pool with sunbeds and umbrellas on the paved surrounds.

Decorated in a traditional style but with a distinctly modern twist, the apartments are arranged in terraces along the hillside. Each apartment has its own small outside sitting area and independent entrance, almost recreating the feel of an old Cretan village. There are 17 apartments in total, some open-plan studios, some one-bedroom apartments and some with two bedrooms and two shower rooms arranged over two storeys. All have modern kitchenettes and televisions (local channels), and the independent air-conditioning and cosy fireplaces make them comfortable whatever the weather conditions.

Although a hire car is automatically included in the cost of the holiday to enable guests to make the most of the fascinating area, the apartments are just 500 metres from the village itself, an easy pre and post-dinner stroll.
