Bungalows Casa Domingo

The Canary IslandsLanzarote › Caleta de Famara

Standing outside the sleepy village of Caleta de Famara, these houses offer simple accommodation close to a long, unspoilt beach famous for its windsurfing conditions.

As you approach the sleepy north-coast village of Caleta de Famara, a sign warns drivers of "sand in the road" - not surprising, given that this is where you will find Lanzarote's longest sandy beach, set against the imposing backdrop of the rugged Famara cliffs. Wonderfully uncommercialised, the Playa de Famara is popular with local surfers and windsurfers. At times, the beach is prone to strong waves and treacherous currents, so swimmers should take care, but there are more sheltered corners for bathers at the end nearest the village, and for long barefoot walks in the sand, Famara would be impossible to beat!
Caleta itself is a delightfully low-key fishing village, with a handful of unpretentious fish restaurants, a couple of simple local bars and a few equipment shops catering for the needs of the surfing community. Simple, whitewashed houses line the sandy streets, where as many boats as cars appear to be parked, and by the small quay, the local men usually sit in the shade and discuss the events of the day.

Situated 1.5 km beyond the village along an unmade but perfectly level track, this small cluster of bungalows will suit couples and families looking for a relaxing seaside holiday without any of the trappings of a modern holiday resort. Casa Domingo comprises four detached houses, each with two bedrooms (one double and one twin), a bathroom, a living-dining room with TV, and a fully equipped kitchen with a large fridge-freezer, a 4-ring hob, an oven and a washing machine.

Whilst not excessively luxurious or stylish, the bungalows are comfortably and practically furnished, and each has a shaded terrace, as well as that most Spanish of features - an enclosed patio for drying clothes. The swimming pool is set to the rear of the houses in a walled courtyard, and is therefore sheltered from the winds, which can occasionally blow quite strongly in these parts. Cloakrooms and a barbecue area are provided by the pool.

In addition to the four bungalows, there is also a detached villa situated slightly apart from the other houses. Internally, it offers very similar accommodation, but benefits from a small private swimming pool, as well as panoramic views of the ocean and the cliffs through the large lounge windows.

As the bungalows are situated outside the village, we have included a hire car in your holiday, which naturally will also enable you to explore the rest of the island - the lovely former capital Teguise is just a 20 minute drive away. However, those not deterred by the half-hour walk into the village can give their car a rest in the evenings - do however remember to pack a torch for the walk back!
