This prettily restored stone house offers simple accommodation full of character, as well as its own small swimming pool.

Cactus Cottage, a prettily restored stone house, is the perfect place for a peaceful, rural holiday. Just along a lane in Keciler, the old Turkish district of Kaya, iron gates open onto a walled garden full of shrubs and fruit trees and a delightful shaded dining area complete with a built in barbecue.

A covered porch leads to the open plan living room and kitchen where the focal point is the original fireplace flanked by easy chairs and a low Turkish table. The country style kitchen has recently been updated with a gas hob and full size fridge, in addition to a wooden table and chairs for guests who choose to dine inside. There is also a small shower room on the ground floor.

To one side of the living room an open staircase leads up to the bedrooms, which can also be reached via an external staircase and a large terrace with views over the valley towards the haunting deserted old Greek village. There are two twin bedrooms - one with air conditioning and the other with a fan. In addition to another bathroom with shower and WC there is also a small sitting area on the first floor.

Cactus Cottage may not be the most luxurious of our villas in Turkey and the layout is certainly a little idiosyncratic, but its quirky character and old-world charm have earned it a special place in our affections. Its appeal is further enhanced by a small swimming pool in the courtyard, so that guests can make the most of relaxing days in these timeless surroundings.

A hire car is included to allow guests the freedom to shop in Fethiye, just a few kilometres away, to provide easy access to the nearby beaches such as Oludeniz or Gemiler or to investigate the area's archaeological treasures. Closer to hand there are numerous walks through the fertile landscape and fresh produce can be bought from the neighbouring farmers.
