Casa Diama

The Canary IslandsLanzarote › La Geria

A secluded house divided into two self-contained apartments with a shared pool, situated in the heart of Lanzarote's wine-growing area with splendid views across this unique landscape

Situated on the edge of the Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote's wine-growing region, La Geria, is unlike any other in the world - a remarkable landscape of volcanic hills covered in black ash from the 18th century eruption of Mount Timanfaya, with each vine protected by a circular dry stone wall. The special soil and climate conditions give the local wines a very distinctive character, and for travellers with an interest in viniculture, a visit to some of the bodegas alongside the country road from Uga towards Teguise is a highlight of any holiday in Lanzarote.

Casa Diama stands approximately 1 km off this road, and is accessed by a rough track. With its gleaming whitewashed walls and green shutters set off against a striking volcanic backdrop, this lovingly restored house visually captures the very essence of Lanzarote, and with the nearest neighbours some 500 metres away, it feels wonderfully secluded. The house has been divided into two separate dwellings, making it ideal for a family with grandparents, or perhaps two couples travelling together, but although the two halves of the house share the pretty little swimming pool, they are also perfectly suitable for being rented independently.

Casa Diama I is the larger part, with one of its entrances leading to two bedrooms (a double and a twin) and a bathroom. A separate door from the terrace leads to the spacious living-dining room with a built-in corner sofa and a large dining table. An archway from the lounge leads to the kitchen, with is equipped with a gas hob, oven and fridge. Casa Diama II has a bedroom with a double bed, separated by an archway from the sitting room, which also incorporates an open-plan kitchenette with a two-ring hob and a microwave oven. A shower room completes the accommodation. Satellite TV (limited English-language channels) and free WiFi are available in both apartments, and each apartment has a spacious terrace with sun-loungers, a table and chairs for outside dining, and direct access to the swimming pool.

Due to Casa Diama's isolated setting, a hire car is essential and we have included this in the cost of your holiday. By car, the villages of Uga and Yaiza are just 10 minutes away, whilst the beach resort of Playa Blanca and the charming former capital of Teguise are less than half-an-hour's drive away in opposite directions. But part of the joy of staying at Casa Diama is being able to stroll through the local vineyards, and visiting the nearby bodegas on foot, so you can sample their wares liberally without having to worry about driving home afterwards! Some of the bodegas have their own restaurants, so you don't necessarily have to drive to eat out, but do remember a sunhat if heading out for lunch, and a good torch if you are planning to walk home after dinner!
