This homely, family-sized villa is full of traditional character and boasts a private swimming pool.

Standing above the road that leads south from Mazo towards Fuencaliente, this attractive and very comfortable house is situated just south of the Cuevas del Belmaco, one of the few prehistoric sites in the Canarian archipelago, which has fascinated archaeologists with its hitherto not fully interpreted inscriptions. Although a hire car is included in your holiday here, one of the advantages of this location is that there are a couple of authentic local restaurants within walking distance (the nearest is just over 300 metres away, the next around 1 km), however, we would recommend carrying a torch if you are walking back along the road at night time.

The house itself strikes just the right balance between traditional character and contemporary comfort, thanks to its sympathetic renovation. The rough-plastered walls with their protruding lava stones are painted a warm shade of terracotta red on the outside, whilst inside they are whitewashed to lighten the interiors. Pitched wooden ceilings, solid floorboards and typically Canarian window seats create an appealingly rustic ambience, further enhanced by the carefully chosen fabrics and furnishings.

Arranged on one floor, the accommodation centres on the homely living-dining room, which is equipped with attractive solid-wood furniture and a large TV set. To one side is a separate country-style kitchen with ceramic hob, oven, large fridge-freezer and dishwasher, whilst in the opposite corner, a small corridor leads to the sleeping quarters. The master bedroom has two beds which can be made up separately or pushed together, and the second bedroom also has twin beds. The third bedroom has a single bed and is accessed through the master bedroom. A large bathroom with a big Jacuzzi bathtub completes the accommodation. Another shower can be found in an external shower room, which also contains a washing machine.

A sea-facing terrace runs the length of the house, whilst to one side there is a private pool bordered by an area for sunbathing. Although quite small, the pool has been fitted with underwater jets to create a current for those wishing to swim for exercise, rather than just having the odd cooling dip.

For basic shopping and a few more restaurants, the centre of Mazo is a 5-10 minute drive away, whilst the island capital Santa Cruz can be reached in just over 20 minutes. In the opposite direction, the volcanoes of the island's southern tip are around half-an-hour's drive away and are certainly worth a visit.
