Located roughly halfway between the present-day island capital Arrecife and its historic predecessor Teguise, the quiet village of Tahiche is primarily famed for the Fundación César Manrique, a gallery dedicated to Lanzarote's influential artist set in his former home - a unique construction created from a series of volcanic bubbles.
Casa Teiga's German owner, himself an architect, was a personal friend of Manrique's and designed his home at the opposite end of the village as a tribute to the artist's distinctive style, with three independent dwellings surrounding a sunken garden where the island's four dominant colours - black, white, blue and green - contrast brilliantly with each other. The property comprises three independent dwellings, arranged around a beautiful freeform swimming pool with a small waterfall and a gleaming whitewashed terrace.
With three bedrooms and a total area of approximately 120 m2, Casa Luna is suitable for parties of up to six people. One of the bedrooms has a double bed, the other two have twin beds, and there are two bathrooms, one with a bathtub, the other with a shower. There is also a very comfortably furnished living-dining room with satellite TV and a gas stove, a fully equipped kitchen, and a large shaded terrace.
The smaller Casa Sol is perfect for a couple and consists of a cosy living-dining room with a simple open plan kitchenette (with fridge, two-ring hob and microwave oven), a double bedroom, a shower room and a raised terrace overlooking the pool and garden.
Both these houses are well furnished and decorated with thoughtful personal touches, lending them a real home-from-home feel, but the most impressive of all is Casa Estrella, which until recently was the private home of Casa Teiga's owner, and as such contains some striking art works and excellent furnishings. At 140 m2, it is the largest house, but as there are two double bedrooms and one single, the maximum occupancy is 5 people. Compared to the very spacious living-dining room, the kitchen may seem quite compact, but is fully equipped. The two bathrooms (one with bath, the other with shower) are also quite striking, and there is even a separate room with a billiard table!
Tahiche is a quiet village without many facilities, but both Teguise and Arrecife - which between them boast plenty of shops and restaurants - can be reached in around 10 minutes using your hire car. In the village itself you will find a bakery and a simple chicken rotisserie/take-away grill restaurant are just a short walk from Casa Teiga, and a rather more sophisticated French restaurant just over 1 km away at the other end of the village. Alternatively, you could just pick up some fresh fish or meat and salad stuffs while you're out and make use of the charming barbecue area in one corner of the attractive courtyard garden.
For accommodation with a distinctive Lanzarotean character in a quiet yet convenient location, Casa Teiga is highly recommended.
