Apartment Casa Tucana

The Canary IslandsLanzarote › Arrecife

A beautifully furnished town-centre apartment, ideal for travellers wishing to stay amongst the local population and exploring the island by public transport

For travellers who are keen to explore Lanzarote without the need to hire a car and to have a wide selection of shops and restaurants within walking distance, but who do not wish to stay in one of the main tourist resorts, the island capital, Arrecife, is a good option. The twice-weekly market held along the seafront promenade tends to attract holidaymakers from the island's beach resorts, but in general, the town isn't overly affected by tourism, in spite of having a decent sandy beach and a couple of attractions, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art housed in the 18th century Castillo de San Jose.

Arrecife's most picturesque area is undoubtedly the Charco de San Gines, a natural inlet that served as the town's original harbour, where local fishermen still more their small wooden boats, their bright colours contrasting with the whitewashed exteriors of the old houses and cottages that overlook the Charco. Casa Tucana is peacefully situated in a small side-street leading off the pedestrian promenade that surrounds this harbour, less than 50 metres from the water's edge. On the middle floor of this three-storey townhouse is a spacious apartment, which has been expertly renovated and beautifully decorated in warm, welcoming colours. With its eclectic yet successful mix of modern and antique furnishings, augmented by carefully chosen paintings, ornaments and Persian carpets, the interiors are certainly a far cry from the blandness of typical holiday apartments.

There are three bedrooms (two doubles and one with twin beds), each with its own rather smart en-suite shower room, but depending on the size of your party, Casa Tucana can be rented with just one or two bedrooms at a reduced rate (with the other bedrooms remaining locked). The remainder of the accommodation is open-plan. The sitting area with its antique leather sofa has satellite TV (limited English-language channels) and a CD player, and the dining area has a glass table and six chairs. Separated by a breakfast bar, the fitted kitchen is very modern and well equipped with a ceramic hob, oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge-freezer, electric kettle and coffee-maker. Although the apartment has no terrace or balcony, large windows let in plenty of light and air, and you could always do as the locals do by just pulling up a chair in the lane outside and watching the world go by.

Arrecife's main shopping street, Calle León y Castillo, is just a 5-minute walk away, as is the seafront promenade. The sandy town beach, Playa del Reducto, can be reached by foot in around 15 minutes, and just beyond is the main bus station from where you can catch busses to the rest of the island. Those who plan to hire a car should note that whilst it is not possible to park at the property, there is usually free parking available within a few minutes' walk.
