Casas Juana, Maria and Carmen

The Canary IslandsLa Gomera › Alajeró

This traditional farmstead converted into three separate holiday homes enjoys a rural hillside setting between the south coast village of Playa Santiago and the Garajonnay National Park.

Peacefully situated on a hillside approximately 2 km from the picturesque village of Alajeró, this traditional farmstead has been expertly restored and converted into three independent dwellings by its friendly owner. As befits their rural setting, Casas Juana, Maria and Carmen are rustic in style, but are nevertheless well-equipped and comfortable.

Each of the three houses comprises an attractively furnished living-dining room with satellite TV, a well-equipped kitchen (open plan in Juana and Carmen, separate from the lounge in Maria) complete with 4-ring hob, oven, fridge and washing machine, two bedrooms (both with twin beds in Juana and Maria; one double and one twin in Carmen) and a bathroom (with large walk-in shower in Carmen, whilst the other two houses have bathtubs).

Being converted from an older building, the three houses vary a little in terms of layout and outlook, but all retain some charming original features, including wooden ceilings and stone-flagged or mosaic-tiled floors. As the property is built on different levels against the hillside, there are some internal stairs in each house, so they are no best suited to guests with walking difficulties.

Being situated almost 800 metres above sea level, Casas Juana, Maria and Carmen enjoy panoramic views down towards the coast and across to El Hierro on a clear day. Electric radiators are provided for those occasions when it may get a little fresh at this altitude, and the south coast village of Playa de Santiago - which is said to enjoy the sunniest climate - is just a 10 km away and thus easily reached using your complimentary hire car.

Playa de Santiago boasts a decent selection of shops and restaurants, but a couple of appealing eating places can also be found closer to home, in Alajeró, just a few minutes' drive away. In the opposite direction, it is just a few kilometres to the start of the Garajonay National Park, making this an ideal location for keen walkers (who will find some excellent terrain right on their doorstep) and anyone else who likes to divide their time between the coast and the mountains.
