Casas Los Dávila

The Canary IslandsLa Gomera › Lepe near Hermigua

Set in a tiny north-coast hamlet, these traditional cottages provide a romantic base for those looking to get away from it all.

Perched on a cliff roughly halfway between the picturesque north-coast villages of Hermigua and Agulo, the tiny hamlet of Lepe is an idyllic location for travellers seeking complete tranquillity and breathtaking ocean views. Standing approximately 30 metres above sea-level, the hamlet comprises just a dozen or so houses, and has no roads, so there is no traffic noise to disturb the peace (Casa Los Dávila's allocated parking space is approximately 200 metres from the house).

The two houses that make up Los Dávila belong to a local teacher, who restored them lovingly. Each offers guest accommodation on the upper floor, whilst the lower floor is occasionally used by the owner himself. Los Dávila I is the oldest house and retains a wealth of traditional features, from original wooden floorboards and ceiling beams to typical Canarian windows and natural stones protruding from the whitewashed walls.

The spacious interiors comprise a living room with a sofa bed for the third person, an archway leading to the kitchen-dining room (with fridge and ceramic hob), a bedroom with twin beds and a compact shower room. In addition, there is a lovely wooden balcony from where the views along the coast and across the ocean towards Tenerife are nothing short of spectacular - you could easily spend whole days here just gazing at the view and listening to the sounds of the waves down below.

Los Dávila II offers similar accommodation, but is a little more modern in style, albeit not quite as spacious as Dávila I. Instead of wooden floors it has ceramic floor tiles, and the kitchen is integrated into the living room. It too, however, has a pitched wooden ceiling and a balcony with equally beguiling views.

Although there are no restaurants or shops in Lepe itself, it takes just a few minutes to drive to the larger villages of Agulo and Hermigua, which between them boast a good choice of eating places and sufficient shops for basic day-to-day needs. For everything else, the island capital San Sebastián is approximately 20 km away. The surrounding area offers some superb terrain for walking, with lush landscapes and splendid sea views, and the start of the Garajonay National Park is just a short drive away.
