Converted from a 150-year old finca, these four very well-appointed apartments enjoy a rural locations within easy driving distance of some of the island's best beaches.

Couples looking for top-quality self-catering accommodation in a tranquil, unspoilt setting yet close to some of the island's best beaches should look no further. As its name implies, Vista Salinas stands in an elevated position above the Salinas de Janubio salt flats, and was converted from a 150-year old finca originally built for the salt flat workers. Following its sympathetic restoration, it now comprises just four single-storey apartments, each finished to the highest standards and decorated with impeccable taste.

Partially exposed stone walls, mellow colourwashes, wooden ceiling beams and handcrafted terracotta floor tiles lend the interiors plenty of rustic charm, but the level of comfort is thoroughly up to date. At the front of each apartment is a living-dining room with comfy sofas, a flat-screen TV and DVD player. The open-plan kitchenettes have a fridge, a two-ring hob, a microwave/mini-oven, a toaster and a coffeemaker, and can be discretely concealed behind louvered doors when not in use.

At the rear there is a bedroom with twin beds which can be made up as a double, and the bathrooms are particularly impressive, benefiting from large Jacuzzi bathtubs and hairdryers. Another bonus that is unusual in Lanzarotean self-catering accommodation is the provision of air- conditioning (which can also used as heating should the weather be a little cooler than expected) in both the lounge and the bedroom.

Each apartment has its own front terrace equipped with wrought-iron patio furniture, whilst the large communal terrace that surrounds the swimming pool is well stocked with wooden sunloungers and chairs. The pool can be heated with the help of solar panels, and there is also an adjacent Jacuzzi from where the views down to the ocean and to the rugged volcanoes of the Timanfaya range are particularly enchanting.

Vista Salinas is just a few minutes' drive from El Golfo, an unspoilt fishing village whose delightfully unpretentious fish restaurants are renowned for their sunset views. The well- kept inland village of Yaiza is a similar distance away and boasts a couple of excellent restaurants, whilst the popular resort of Playa Blanca - which offers sandy beaches, numerous eating places and all the shops you are likely to need - is only marginally further. Just beyond Playa Blanca, the famous Papagayo beaches can be reached by car in around 20 minutes from here.

For those occasions when you do not wish to drive, there is another very pleasant fish restaurant on the viewpoint overlooking the salt-flats, which is just a 10 minute walk from the apartments.
