Two restored cottages with a shared swimming pool, perched high above the south-west coast on the edge of a small rural village

Perched on a rocky ledge surrounded by an impressive ravine, the setting of these two restored old cottages can only be described as idyllic. The houses stand on the edge of the tiny mountain village of Taucho, at an altitude of nearly 800 metres, which grants them truly mesmerising views down to the coast and across the Atlantic towards La Gomera and La Palma, as well as back across the village to the peak of Mount Teide.

The property has been owned by the same family since the 18th century, and was converted into holiday accommodation approximately 10 years ago. The restoration was carried out with attention to detail and respect for the historic fabric of the buildings. The older house, "Casa El Pino", is best suited to two couples travelling together or a family with older children, as all the rooms are accessed externally, as was the norm in old Canarian cottages. The accommodation comprises two twin rooms, each with its own en suite shower room, a fully equipped kitchen, a lounge and a shaded terrace. "Casa El Poleo" offers similar accommodation except that it only has one shower room shared between the two twin rooms, but has the advantage that all the rooms are linked internally. In both houses, the fixtures and furnishings have been carefully chosen to provide comfortable accommodation without distracting from the cottages' distinctive period charm.

A small stone building houses an inside barbecue area shared between the two houses, a lovely spot for an atmospheric meal in very rustic surroundings. Also shared between the two houses is the swimming pool, which is surrounded by a terrace equipped with sun-loungers and parasols. As El Estanco Viejo's setting is so utterly tranquil, this is the perfect place for complete relaxation, loosing yourself in the pages of a good book, or simply contemplating the magnificent panorama for hours on end.

For those seeking more active pursuits, there are rewarding mountain walks in the surrounding area, and we have of course included a hire car in your holiday here to help you explore the rest of the island. The nearest sandy beaches are just over 10 km away in the resort of Costa Adeje, or you can head further up along the west coast for quieter coves. Those who prefer to spend all the time in the rural hinterland will find that the neighbouring villages provide all the day-to-day essentials. The nearest supermarket is 3 km away, and Taucho itself boasts a couple of local bars and an appealing little restaurant, which is just 500 metres from the cottages and thus comes in handy when you have had a busy day exploring, or just relaxed so comprehensively that getting in the car seems like too much effort.
