Whilst the small resort of Armenistis in the north-west of Ikaria offers quite a surprising range of accommodation for such an unspoilt island, visitors keen to spend time exploring the south and east of the island are somewhat less spoilt for choice. For although Agios Kirikos serves as the island capital and one of the two main ports on Ikaria, lodgings here are largely confined to simple village rooms aimed more at backpackers than discerning travellers.
One notable exception is Filiopi, a handsome three-storey building comprising ten bright and airy apartments. Situated in an attractive residential neighbourhood just 200 metres west from the port and the quayside square with its collection of café-bars and tavernas, the position is both convenient and peaceful. Although the building is set back one street from the seafront, it stands on slightly elevated ground so that even the ground-floor apartments catch glimpses of the sea from their terraces, whilst the balconies of the upper-floor apartments enjoy full sea views.
Being of fairly recent construction, Filiopi offers accommodation of a good modern standard. Suitable for up to three people, the apartments consist of a spacious living-dining room with a pull-out sofa bed, a proper open-plan kitchen with a full-size cooker and a large fridge-freezer, a separate bedroom with twin beds and a modern shower room. Both the bedroom and lounge have radiators for cooler nights during early or late season, and air-conditioning and satellite TV (limited channels) are provided in the lounge.
For those who don't really wish to self-cater, breakfast is available downstairs in the attractive residents' bar, where you can also chat to your hosts and fellow holidaymakers at other times of the day, perhaps swapping suggestions for days out and things to see in the local area. There is a pebbly beach just a few minutes' walk away, and other coves can be reached on foot in around 20 minutes. Agios Kirikos boasts all the essential holiday amenities - such as tavernas, mini-markets and cash-points - within easy walking distance from the apartments, and it is possible to do some exploring on local buses, but as schedules are designed for local needs rather than touring itineraries, those keen to discover this side of the island in depth may want to consider hiring a car for at least part of their stay.
