The Canary IslandsTenerife › Buenavista del Norte

This charming cluster of single-storey studios and apartments with a shared pool is well placed for exploring the island's unspoilt Isla Baja region

Boasting some of the most diverse and rewarding walking terrain on Tenerife, the north-west corner of the island - known as Isla Baja - feels far removed from the busy holiday resorts of the south, and remains the preserve of nature-lovers and relaxation-seekers. Nestling at the foot of the rugged Teno massif, Buenavista is the most westerly town on the island, and an excellent base from which to explore this unspoilt corner of Tenerife.

Finca El Tejado is a pretty, Mediterranean-style villa set on the edge of the town. Made up of several whitewashed, single-storey buildings arranged around a flower-filled courtyard, it comprises the owners' own living accommodation, four self-catering apartments and two additional guestrooms. The central garden incorporates an enticing swimming pool surrounded by a paved sunbathing terrace, and benefits from lovely mountain views.

Wooden ceilings, terracotta floor tiles, warm colours and traditional wood furnishings lend the interiors a certain rustic charm. The apartment nearest the pool, "La Gañania" is also the largest, comprising two bedrooms (both with twin beds), and a living room with an open plan kitchen (with two ring hob, fridge and microwave). "La Carpinteria" also has two bedrooms, one with twin beds, the other with a single bed.

"El Taller" has one bedroom with twin beds arranged together, plus a sofa bed for a third person in the lounge, whilst "Aperos" is a spacious studio with a large double bed and a small separate kitchen. Naturally, all the apartments have shower rooms. In addition, there are two guestrooms with en suite shower rooms but without any self-catering facilities, which would suit parties requiring additional sleeping accommodation. Of these, "El Granero" has a double bed, whilst "La Bodega" has twins.

There are a few local restaurants within reasonably easy walking distance; the closest is just 500 metres away, as is the nearest mini-market, so you needn't walk too far to fetch your breakfast ingredients. By car, you can follow the coast to reach the historic town of Garachico in around 15 minutes, whilst the mountain town of Santiago del Teide, which has a weekly farmers market, is just a little further. Continuing over the mountains, you can reach the laid-back west coast resorts of Los Gigantes and Playa de la Arena, whilst just outside Buenavista itself, there is also an expertly designed 18-hole golf course.
