Hotel Alpino Atlantico

Madeira and Porto SantoFunchal & South-East Madeira › Caniço de Baixo

This small and intimate hotel offers peaceful accommodation with splendid ocean views, as well as the use of the extensive leisure facilites of its two larger sister hotels nearby.

Perched on the cliff in a quiet area towards the western end of Caniço de Baixo, this small but comfortable hotel is ideal for those who would like to have access to the sort of leisure facilities that only a large hotel can offer, but don't actually wish to stay in a large hotel. In fact, with just 24 rooms and 3 suites, a holiday at the Alpino Atlantico doesn't feel like staying in a hotel at all. The only other facilities on site are a small reception (open at certain times of the day), a sauna, and a breakfast room, where an extensive buffet is laid on every morning, so there is nothing to disturb your peace as you relax on your balcony or on one of the sunloungers in the lovely cliff-top gardens.

Just a 5-minute stroll away, however, you will find the Alpino Atlantico's two (German-owned) sister hotels, the Galosol and the Galomar, where guests may use all the facilities at no extra charge. The Galomar has its own ocean-level lido reached by a lift, with a seawater swimming pool, a renowned diving school and direct sea access via steps. The Galosol boasts an outdoor freshwater pool, a heated indoor swimming pool and a superb health & fitness centre with a well-equipped gym, squash courts and all kinds of beauty, massage and spa treatments (treatments payable locally). Between them, these two hotels also offer five restaurants, including an Italian pizzeria and a popular fish restaurant perched just above the lido, and the romantic restaurant of the Inn & Art is just a minute's walk from the Alpino Atlantico, so guests here have a decent choice of dinner venues within very easy walking distance. Those who enjoy a little after-dinner entertainment will often find live music in the Galosol's bar, or during the summer months on the terrace that surrounds the Galosol's pool.

If, on the other hand, your idea of evening entertainment is a quiet drink on your balcony whilst marvelling at the silvery reflection of the moon on the ocean, the Alpino Atlantico is the right place, for each room has a balcony or terrace facing the sea. Inside, the rooms are stylish and comfortable, with terracotta floor tiles and wrought-iron furnishings lending an attractive Mediterranean feel. All rooms have modern en suite bathrooms with hairdryers, air-conditioning, satellite TV, safety deposit boxes, mini-bars and coffeemakers. There are also three suites with separate living rooms on the ground floor, available on request.

For occasional forays into Funchal, the regular scheduled bus service stops about 500 metres from the hotel, whilst for exploring further afield, car hire, guided walks or organised excursions can easily be arranged from here.
