Perhaps the most attractive of the new developments on Porto Santo is the Pestana Beach Resort, which opened its doors in early 2008. Set in spacious grounds leading right down to the glorious sweep of sandy beach that the island is so famous for, the hotel's fifteen low rise buildings have been carefully designed to complement the landscape. Two large freeform swimming pools (one freshwater and one sea water) flow through the grounds and are crisscrossed by attractive wooden walkways.
Each of the 275 rooms and suites is contemporarily but comfortably furnished and has all the facilities you would expect in a hotel of its category, including air-conditioning, cable TV with LCD screen, digital safe, mini-bar and internet access (payable locally). The spacious bathrooms all have bathtubs and showers and hair dryers are of course provided. Guests can choose either a pool or garden view room and both types have fully furnished balconies.
Extensive buffet breakfasts are served in the Mares restaurant and those on half board will be served either buffet or barbecue dinners whilst those who prefer more flexible dining options can dine in either of the two a la carte restaurants, although both are not open every night. The pool, beach and Sunset bars dispense drinks at various times of the day for those who choose to wile away their time relaxing in the grounds and whilst the more energetic can make use of the Spa facilities with its indoor pool, gym, sauna, Turkish bath, massage, aromatherapy and treatment rooms (some facilities are charged locally). The hotel also has 2 tennis courts but just a short stroll away is the new island's tennis academy with six more courts and the new Seve Ballesteros designed golf course is a short drive away as is the equestrian centre. Guests who prefer natural pursuits have the whole nine kilometre stretch of beach on their doorstep and the low hills behind and thise who like a little opttering can explore the streets of the nearby village of Vila Baleira.
