The delightful Quinta da Bela Vista was the first of Madeira's traditional manor houses to be converted into a 5-star hotel, and although others have since followed that trend, it remains one of Funchal's most prestigious addresses.
Situated on a hillside approximately 2 km north-west from the centre of Funchal, the Quinta opened in 1989, and whilst it has been extended several times since then to accommodate its ever-growing number of loyal visitors, it retains a pleasantly intimate atmosphere, thanks not only to the thoughtful design of the building and the highly personalised service, but also to the 20,000 square meters of landscaped gardens, which enable each guest to find their own, peaceful corner.
The original manor house dates back to 1844 and in addition to four impressive junior suites contains several public sitting rooms furnished with carefully chosen antiques (the Quinta houses one of the most remarkable collections of English antiques to be found anywhere outside England).
The remaining 80 or so guestrooms are spread across three newer buildings and offer all the creature comforts you would expect to find in a five-star hotel, including marble bathrooms, hairdryers, bathrobes, safety deposit boxes, telephones, cable TV and air-conditioning. Rooms with balconies, superior rooms and extremely spacious deluxe rooms are available at a supplement.
The Quinta's main restaurant, "Avista Navios", serves an extensive buffet breakfast and an exquisite table d'hôte menu for dinner, whilst the intimate "Casa Mãe" restaurant in the old manor house provides a full à la carte menu in a very elegant setting.
Depending on the weather, afternoon tea can be taken in one of the cosy lounges or on one of the lovely terraces overlooking the bay of Funchal, and the hotel's library, games room and billiards room are equally inviting. Another popular spot for a drink in the evening, or a light snack during the day, is the "Little Pleasure House" situated in the gardens.
Close by, you will find the hotel's heated swimming pool, surrounded by a large sunbathing terrace with splendid views of the mountains and the bay. Relaxation is further aided by the Jacuzzi and sauna, whilst for those who enjoy a little exercise there is a small gym and a tennis court. Hotel guests also qualify for discounted green fees at the island's two golf courses.
A courtesy minibus operates down to the centre of Funchal on weekdays, and naturally taxis can also easily be summoned, for those occasions when you can tear yourself away from this luxurious haven.
