Quinta da Penha de França

Madeira and Porto SantoFunchal & South-East Madeira › Funchal

Consisting of an original cliff-top wing and a newer extension at sea-level, this friendly, family-run hotel offers comfortable accommodation within walking distance from the town centre and marina.

Situated just west of the town centre, the charming Quinta da Penha de França is one of Funchal's most established hotels, but unlike many of the town's more famous lodgings, remains a real family-run concern and retains a delightfully relaxing and informal ambience, offering a sense of tradition without any hint of stuffiness.

The hotel consists of two distinct sections: the original, cliff-top part is built around an old manor house and sits in luxuriant, sub-tropical gardens, whilst a more recent addition, the Penha França Mar, is located right on the ocean shore, with direct access to the sea via a swimming platform. The two parts are connected by a small footbridge and a lift, and all guests may use the facilities of both. Each has its own swimming pool (the one in the original Quinta is heated, and the one by the ocean is seawater).

For Cachet Travel guests, we have selected Superior Garden View rooms in the original part of the hotel, and Sea View rooms in the Penha França Mar. The former are very prettily decorated in a country house style and afford side sea views from their balconies in addition to the picturesque outlook across the garden that their name implies, whilst the latter are decorated in a more maritime style, as befits their setting. All have modern en suite bathrooms, air-conditioning, mini-bars, safes, telephones and cable TV.

For cooler days and cosy evenings, there are several intimate lounges in the old manor house, whilst the hotel's restaurant and its adjacent bar, "Joe's", are something of a local institution, popular with Funchal's residents not only for the food, and impressive wine list, but also for their olde-worlde, club-like atmosphere. When you fancy a change, Funchal's centre is just a 15-minute walk away - a flat stroll along the port from the Penha França Mar, or a steeper walk through the lovely Santa Catarina park from the original building.
