Opened in May 2002, the flagship hotel of the prestigious "Charming Hotels" group offers not only the latest in 5-star luxury but - more importantly - a level of personal service and an intimate atmosphere that the large hotels of the lido area simply cannot match. Perched on the crest of a hill just over 1km from the town centre, this sympathetically extended manor house stands in 12,000 m2 of beautifully landscaped gardens and - true to its name - boasts panoramic views of the town, the mountains and the sea.

With 70 rooms and suites, the hotel is small enough to treat each guest as an individual, but large enough to offer an excellent range of facilities, including a superb spa complex with a heated indoor-outdoor swimming pool, sauna, Turkish bath and all kinds of beauty and massage treatments. Other relaxing activities incorporated into the lovely gardens that surround the hotel include a 9-hole crazy-golf course, a giant chess set and a boules pitch.

Sumptuously appointed, the guestrooms come equipped with all the luxuries you would expect to find in a 5-star hotel, including marble and oak bathrooms and private balconies. Standard rooms look out over the gardens, whilst rooms with panoramic views of the ocean and the mountains are available at a supplement. The wonderfully spacious public areas are equally appealing and combine an air of traditional elegance with a stylish, contemporary twist, inviting you to linger over your after-dinner coffees or a drink or two from the bar.

The hotel's gourmet restaurant opens onto a covered veranda with breathtaking views - the perfect setting to enjoy the exquisite cuisine and fine service. In the mornings, you can help yourself from a tempting buffet of cereals, fruit, cold meats and cheeses whilst hot breakfasts are cooked to order and served at the table. Dinner is a delicious 5-course table d'hôte menu or you may take your pick from the tempting à la Carte selection. Guests on half board may also dine at the other "Charming Hotels", including the Quinta do Monte and Quinta do Estreito, at no extra charge, and transport between the hotels is provided.

For those occasions when you can tear yourself away from this luxurious haven, the centre of Funchal is a twenty minute walk downhill, or a short ride by taxi or the hotel's own courtesy bus.
