Quinta do Monte

Madeira and Porto SantoFunchal & South-East Madeira › Funchal

Situated opposite the famous Monte Palace Tropical Gardens and standing in lovely grounds of its own, this comfortable manor house hotel is particularly well suited to garden-lovers.

Perched on a hill some 600 metres above sea level, the leafy village of Monte is one of Funchal's loveliest neighbourhoods, admired by locals and holidaymakers alike for its glorious views down to the city and the ocean, its distinctive church and the famous Monte Palace Tropical Gardens, one of the island's most fascinating botanical parks. Garden lovers will certainly adore Quinta do Monte, for not only is it just the shortest of walks from the Monte Palace, it also sits in delightfully mature grounds of its own, with cobbled footpaths meandering their way through century-old trees and flowering shrubs. A charming focal point is the expertly restored chapel, from where the view down to Funchal is especially enchanting, and where weddings are performed from time to time.

Under the same management as the acclaimed Quinta do Estreito, the Quinta do Monte shares its sister hotel's dedication to highly personal service, its air of understated elegance and its refined yet relaxed ambience. The original manor house is the setting for the welcoming bar and lounge areas, where "Royal Tea" is served every afternoon, whilst a modern extension, designed in the traditional Madeiran colours of deep green and terracotta red, houses the guestrooms, the elegant wood- panelled restaurant and the sunny conservatory.

The accommodation is as luxurious as the grounds are luxuriant, and the 42 rooms are both stylish and comfortable. Each has a very spacious bathroom and a private balcony with lovely views towards the sea framed by the lush foliage of the gardens. Naturally, all rooms come equipped with air-conditioning, cable TV, safety deposit boxes (free of charge), minibar and direct-dial telephone, whilst other thoughtful touches include the provision of fluffy bathrobes and make-up mirrors.

Monte's privileged location high above the hustle and bustle of Funchal makes it easy to spend whole days just relaxing, strolling in the gardens, swimming in the heated indoor pool or perhaps reading in the cosy library. When the city's attractions beckon, however, there is an unusually wide range of transport options available: naturally, there are buses and taxis, and the hotel runs its own courtesy minibus service, but the most exhilarating way down into town is surely the wicker toboggan run which starts nearby, whilst the Funchal-Monte cable car (discounted tickets are available at reception), whisks you back up in the most spectacular fashion.
