Travellers seeking stylish accommodation with a very personal ambience in authentic surroundings away from Funchal's modern tourist district need look no further than the recently opened Residence Conde Carvalhal. Standing in an elevated setting only 750 metres from the heart of the Old Town, this beautifully restored Madeiran mansion and its modern annex form an intimate retreat within easy walking distance of Funchal's most atmospheric quarter, with its huge choice of restaurants, bars, the local fish and vegetable market, and the cable car to Monte.

Comprising just 14 studios, the Residence Conde Carvalhal impresses with its emphasis on attentive and personal service, and the excellent reputation the hotel has already acquired barely a year after opening is testament to the dedication of its staff, who go out of their way to ensure that your stay is memorable for all the right reasons.

Set in the original building, the public areas are tastefully furnished in the style of a traditional quinta. Afternoon tea and light snacks can be taken in the lounge, on the sunny veranda or in the large garden, with its spectacular views over the town and sea. If you fancy something a little stronger, you can help yourself to a drink from the honesty bar. Board games and a chess set are available, whilst the Film/TV lounge with its 66-inch plasma screen is the natural venue for any sports tournaments and other TV events.

The studios themselves are located in the modern annex and are decorated in a suitably contemporary style. Spacious and comfortably furnished, each has adjoining twin beds, a dressing table, a large wardrobe, a table and two chairs. Each also has a modern shower room and a small kitchenette with a fridge, microwave and ceramic hob, ideal for preparing breakfast or the odd snack (for those who prefer not to self-cater, breakfast is available for a local charge of €7.50). All studios also benefit from air-conditioning and heating, large flat-screen cable TVs, wifi internet access, direct dial telephones and safety deposit boxes, and each has large double-glazed doors opening onto a Juliet-balcony (with partial views through the mature trees of the town and sea from the superior view studios).

Although the hotel does not boast its own swimming pool, guests can enjoy complimentary use of the nearby Barreirinha Lido complex with its seawater swimming pool and platforms providing access to the sea (free entrance tickets are available at reception). Located around 650 metres away next to the distinctive fortress of São Tiago, this is popular with local residents, making it a pleasantly un-touristy spot for swimming and sunbathing.

For those planning to hire a car, there is free garage parking, but part of the appeal of staying at the Residence Conde Carvalhal is that most of Funchal's attractions are so easily accessible on foot.
