Architecturally one of the most beautiful country house hotels in the entire archipelago, the delightful El Nogal offers a splendid mountain location for those who enjoy walking and other active pursuits, and excellent leisure facilities for those who simply wish to unwind away from the hustle and bustle of the coastal resorts. The village of La Escalona stands nearly 1,200 metres above sea level, on the way from the south coast towards Vilaflor and Mount Teide. The village still remains a traditional farming community, and the original part of the hotel was converted from a handsome 18th-century farmhouse in 1999. Within just a couple of years, however, the El Nogal had become so popular that its owners decided to expand it to its current size of 42 rooms.
Fortunately, the recent extension blends in beautifully with the original building, and the exterior, with its mellow colour-washed walls, partially exposed stonework and traditional Canarian woodwork, creates a very inviting first impression. The interiors are just as attractive, blending classic Canarian style with some rather striking art nouveau touches. Although not huge, the guestrooms are very comfortable and have all the homely charm of a real mountain lodge. All have modern bath or shower rooms, heating, satellite TV, mini-bars, telephones and safety deposit boxes, and some have small wooden balconies. Superior rooms on the upper floor with more extensive views are available on request at a supplement.
Ever keen to improve their hotel further, El Nogal's owners have added an excellent spa in 2005, with a heated indoor swimming pool, several Jacuzzis, a sauna and a Turkish bath (use of the spa is payable locally). For sunny days, there is also a heated outdoor swimming pool is the lovely mature garden, where you can relax and enjoy the clean mountain air and the panoramic views down to the coast and across the ocean to La Gomera and El Hierro.
Tempting though it is to just enjoy the hotel and its facilities, few could resist the lure of the excellent walking terrain that lies on your doorstep and just a little further afield. A buffet breakfast sets you up for the day, whilst in the evenings you can refuel on hearty mountain fare and authentic Canarian cuisine in the charming restaurant. The excellent-value half-board option allows you to choose from the table d'hôte menu, and there is a full à la carte menu for those opting for the bed & breakfast option. The latter will find a couple of other restaurants in the village, whilst for a complete change of pace and scenery, the coast is just a half-hour drive away.
