Situated in the north of the island, approximately 20 km from the island capital San Sebastián, Hermigua is a large and attractive village, spread out along a fertile valley that forms La Gomera's agricultural heartlands, with the cultivation of bananas being of particular importance. Perched on the hillside above the village, with spectacular views across the valley to the terraced mountainsides and the sea, the Ibo Alfaro is a delightful retreat for walkers, nature lovers and all those who appreciate the personal atmosphere of a small country house hotel.

Lovingly restored from a 150-year old manor house, the Iba Alfaro now comprises 17 guests rooms, which have been prettily furnished and decorated with great attention to detail by the hotel's friendly German owner. All retain some original features, from traditional Canarian window seats to wooden ceilings or mellow floor tiles, and all have attractively tiled en suite bath or shower rooms. The furnishings and fabrics have been chosen to complement the traditional ambience of the interiors.

The same theme is carried through to the cosy breakfast room, which is particularly charming with its exposed stone walls and striking contemporary paintings, with its adjoining terrace, which is blessed with extensive views stretching as far as Tenerife on a clear day.

As the hotel does not have a restaurant for evening meals, your complimentary hire car will come in handy for visiting some of the appealing local restaurants dotted around the various hamlets that make up Hermigua. By car, you can easily explore the whole of the island, including the Garajonay National Park, which starts about 10 km from here. The nearest rocky beach for sea swimming (in calm weather only) is approximately 4 km away.

Whilst the car will undoubtedly be useful, part of the appeal of staying at the Ibo Alfaro is that there is some very rewarding terrain for walking right on your doorstep, and there any many little treasures to be explored in the Hermigua valley itself, including a number of interesting old churches.
