Jardín de las Hayas

The Canary IslandsLa Gomera › Las Hayas near Arure

Situated just outside the boundaries of the National Park at an altitude of 1000 metres, these rural cottages are ideal for keen walkers and those looking to get away from it all.

Situated less than 500 metres from the boundaries of the Garajonnay National Park, at an altitude of 1000 metres, the tiny hamlet of Las Hayas makes an ideal holiday base for keen walkers and those seeking complete relaxation in unspoilt, rural surroundings. For many years, the only thing that placed Las Hayas on the map was La Montaña, an unpretentious little restaurant serving up simple but honest vegetarian food, prepared by the legendary Efigenia using only the freshest local produce and working from recipes passed down through generations.

So that nature-lovers could not just dine, but also stay in this lovely setting, Efigenia's family set about restoring half a dozen of the old village houses a short stroll from the restaurant. The result is Jardín de las Hayas, a group of highly individual holiday homes which retain all of their traditional charm, thanks to their handsome lava stone walls, stone-flagged floors and pitched wooden ceilings. Yet the level of comfort inside is perfectly up-to-date, and there is a contemporary twist to the styling, especially in the rather splendid bath or shower rooms.

The houses stand in two separate clusters, one enjoying distant ocean views across unspoilt countryside towards the island of El Hierro, the other blessed with a similar outlook in the direction of La Palma. Naturally, the houses vary somewhat in terms of size, layout and décor, but all have open-plan kitchenettes for basic self-catering and furnished terraces from which to enjoy the views. Heating is also provided in each house, as it can get a little chilly at this altitude in the winter.

There are three couple-size cottages, each with a twin bedroom and a small sitting area, called "Pajar Tia Delfina", "Pajar de la Cañada" and "Los Pinos" (a third bed for a child can be provided in Los Pinos). "Bodega del Raso" has twin beds in the bedroom and a larger lounge with a double sofa-bed and can thus accommodate families of up to four people, as can "Casa Tia Delfina", which is arranged on two floors, with a double bedroom on the lower floor and twin beds in the upper floor lounge.

The largest house, "Cañada del Hoyito", comprises five bedrooms, all en-suite, which can be rented individually on a bed & breakfast basis with breakfast taken at the nearby restaurant. Alternatively, the three ground-floor bedrooms form a self-contained unit with a comfortable lounge and a kitchen/dining room, which can be rented as a three-bedroom apartment for parties of up to six people.

Whilst the location at Las Hayas will primarily appeal to walkers and those wishing to get away from it all, the hire car that is included in your holiday enables an easy change of pace when desired. The relaxed beach resort of Valle Gran Rey, known for its mild climate, is just a 20 minute drive away, whilst the island capital, San Sebastian, can be reached in under an hour.
