Arriving at Podare beach, a few kilometres below the village of Kerames, you could be forgiven for thinking that you've entered a time warp and been thrust back into the Greece of the seventies, before the advent of the charter flight borne hoards. With the Libyan Sea stretching before it and a single waterside taverna a couple of hundred metres along the shoreline, the solitary blue and white building that houses the Kionia Apartments couldn't be more timelessly appealing.
On entering the apartments the standard of the accommodation and the thoroughly modern facilities of air-conditioning, satellite TV, computer and kitchen complete with fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, kettle, toaster and coffee machine somewhat shatter the time warp illusion, probably no bad thing given the primitive nature of Greek accommodation in those halcyon days.
There are just six apartments each with a furnished sea-facing terrace. On the ground floor are two are studios for two with either a double or twin beds an open-plan kitchenette (no dishwasher, freezer, microwave or computer in the studios) and a shower room. The two one-bedroom apartments that sleep up to four, one with twin beds in the bedroom and the other with a double with a sofa bed in the living room and a full bath in the bathroom are both on the top floot. Finally, on the first floor there are two two-bedroom apartments capable of sleeping up to six, each with a twin and a double bedroom, a sofa bed in the living room and a full bath in the bathroom. Other facilities include a communal washing machine and each apartment has an iron and ironing board.
In addition to the nearby waterfront eatery there are a couple of simple village tavernas and two further beach tavernas just a short drive away, as is a shop for very basic provisions. The nearest town for a more serious shopping and for access to a bank and cash point is Spili, some twenty kilometres away. There are numerous beaches to explore along the southern coastline either on foot or by spectacularly scenic drives. Archaeology and history lovers can easily access the famous sites of Phaestos and Agia Triada in addition to the atmospheric Preveli monastery and the port town of Rethymnon with its old Venetian quarter is just 50 kilometres away.
