Just 300 metres directly inland from the evocative shoreline fortress at Frangokastello and set in two and a half acres of grounds with emerald lawns, landscaped flowerbeds and an impressive 125 square metre pool, the Monachus-Monachus Apartments are an impressive new addition to the village's previously quite limited range of accommodation.
Quirkily named after an indigenous and endangered seal species, the 22 apartments are arranged in three buildings and have been completed to the latest specifications. In all there are fourteen two-bedroom apartments, sleeping up to five people, four one-bedroom apartments sleeping two, and four open plan studios again sleeping two. All the apartments have kitchenettes with cookers and full fridges and are air-conditioned and double-glazed, a wise precaution for the windier times of year. Each apartment has a balcony facing the sea and the fortress, furnished for al fresco dining and offering a perfect viewpoint for spotting the ghostly drossilites who, legend has it, emerge from the sea on the anniversary of their massacre in mid-May.
The charming and generous hosts who preside over the pool bar are more than happy to share their local knowledge and contacts with their summer visitors and there is certainly no language barrier as they completed their own education in Britain.
It is perfectly possible to spend a whole holiday relaxing and enjoying the splendid setting and beaches of Frangokastello. In the daytime there is the added diversion of watching the day-trippers spend their obligatory half an hour visiting the fortress whereas in the evening the seaside tavernas remain the privileged and relaxed domain of those fortunate enough to actually be staying in the village.
For the more energetic, walking the nearby Imbros Gorge is a popular pursuit, as is a walk through the spectacular sand dunes to one end of the village. We do, however, offer car hire at a special rate (as long as it collected from and returned to the airport) for those who wish to make the most of exploring the wild and unique Sfakia region.
