Quinta da Fajã

Madeira and Porto SantoFunchal & South-East Madeira › São Gonçalo near Funchal

Standing in mature gardens on the outskirts of Funchal, these four traditional cottages will suit those seeking independent accommodation within easy reach of the island capital.

If you dream of staying in a romantic country cottage but still would like to be close to all the attractions of Funchal, Quinta da Fajã could well be the answer. Converted from the outbuildings of an old country estate, these four detached cottages are set in 11 acres of the most splendid gardens, with winding footpaths wending their way past ancient trees, flowering shrubs and heavily laden vines covering a well-tended vegetable garden. A shaded brook runs through the grounds, and lovely levada walks start just a kilometre from the Quinta, yet in spite of this scenic setting on the slopes above Funchal, Quinta da Fajã is just a 15-minute drive from the town centre, a similar distance from the airport, and only 5 minutes by car from the Quinta do Palheiro gardens and golf course.

Although set in a suburb of the city, Quinta da Fajã is a unique holiday hideaway full of authentic character. All accommodation is charmingly furnished and decorated, and each cottage has its own terrace affording a good degree of privacy. Converted from a hay barn, the "Doll's House" is perfect for couples, with a cosy living room with open plan kitchen on the ground floor, and a double bedroom with en suite bathroom on the upper floor. A little further up the hill, in a sunny spot amidst the vines, the single-storey "Garden Cottage" comprises a living room with open plan kitchen, a double bedroom with an adjacent bathroom and a twin room with en suite shower room. Opposite this is the "Wine Lodge", set on the upper floor of the old bodega, which comprises an elegant living-dining room with an open fireplace, a separate kitchen, a double bedroom with en suite shower room and a twin room with en suite bathroom. The lounge has splendid views down to the bay of Funchal, and this cottage also has cable TV and central heating.

Newly available for holiday rental, the "Stone House" benefits from a very private setting. Arranged on two floors, it comprises a comfortable lounge, a well equipped kitchen with dishwasher, three bedrooms (one double, one twin and one single) and a large shower room with power shower. This cottage also has its own small swimming pool (in operation from April until November only), but is unsuitable for families with young children.

Basic groceries - including fresh bread - can be bought from one of the two small shops situated just a short walk from the Quinta's gates, but a hire car is included in the cost of your holiday to facilitate easy access to Funchal and to allow guests to explore further afield. Then again, Quinta da Fajã's grounds are so enchanting that many guests will be reluctant to spend much time anywhere else.
