Quinta de São Gonçalo

Madeira and Porto SantoFunchal & South-East Madeira › Funchal

Set in a quiet residential area east of Funchal, this pretty Quinta is a charming and intimate base within easy reach of the town centre.

Situated in the quiet residential neighbourhood of São Gonçalo at the eastern end of Funchal, this delightful quinta is not only far removed geographically from the modern hotel zone towards the west of the city, it also provides the perfect antidote to the large, impersonal tourist complexes of that area in terms of its style and ambience. This graceful old house, full of fascinating antiques, has belonged to the same family for generations, and the current owner, Rita Vasconcalves, has expertly restored and converted it into a charming base for those who prefer their holiday accommodation on a more intimate scale.

There are just five guest rooms situated on the upper floor, each with a modern en suite bathroom and with lovely views of the garden and the sea. Each room is prettily decorated in its own individual style, and there is a choice of twin or double beds. Downstairs, the public lounge has satellite TV and plenty of comfy sofas for those who wish to relax and perhaps chat to their fellow-holidaymakers over a drink from the honesty bar. On cooler days, breakfast is served here around the large dining table, whilst on warm, sunny mornings most guests opt to start their day on the terrace, in order to enjoy the lovely views out to sea and along the coast towards the centre of town.

From Quinta de São Gonçalo, it is about 2.5km to the Old Town, and just a little further to the main shopping area and the city centre. Those who enjoy walking can reach the old town in about 40 minutes following the old - and in parts narrow - coast road, but a regular public bus service stops just 20 metres or so from the quinta's gates. Should you be returning late after dinner or a night out in the centre, a taxi back certainly won't break the bank, whilst for those planning on hiring a car, there is ample parking on site.

Whilst it is easy to visit the centre of Funchal and all its attractions, Quinta de São Gonçalo is also a lovely spot for spending lazy days relaxing with a good book, or perhaps just daydreaming and admiring the views. Sunloungers are provided in the beautiful, flower-filled gardens, and there is plenty of space for everyone to find their own quiet corner. For those who wish to have easy access to Funchal but prefer to be away from the busy city centre, Quinta de São Gonçalo is an attractive, affordable and appealingly personal base.
