Quinta do Estreito

Madeira and Porto SantoFunchal & South-East Madeira › Estreito de Câmara de Lobos

A member of the "Charming Hotels" group, this attractive Quinta is well placed for exploring both Funchal and the west of the island from a comfortable and relaxing base.

The village of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos nestles 400 metres above the south coast just 20 minutes drive west of Funchal and is a bustling community complete with a supermarket, a variety of shops, restaurants and banks, a taxi rank and even a colourful Sunday street market. The old manor house, the Quinta do Estreito, a few hundred yards below the centre of the village has been carefully restored and a striking new building added on the hillside below to create an elegant hotel.

The phrase 'no expense has been spared' is justified in this case as despite the wealth of local vegetation the grounds have been planted with cypresses imported from Italy, carefully clipped to perfectly complement the tiled surrounds of the swimming pool, which during the cooler months is enclosed by an ingenious, expandable conservatory. Reclining by the pool guests can gaze over the Quinta's vines and small olive grove down to the dramatic coastline below as they sip a drink from the pool bar and decide whether or not to try the sauna just a few steps away.

The view down to the ocean can also be enjoyed from the 48 rooms, each of which has a partially covered balcony comfortably furnished with wicker chairs and where continental breakfast is served if the restaurant buffet seems too far to stroll. Each room is tastefully furnished in rich burgundy and cream with a polished oak floor and has a cable television and a marble and oak bathroom. The manor house itself has been furnished in almost Venetian style splendour cleverly blending the old with the new. Silk-swathed pillars encircle the elegant Bacchus restaurant and there is a separate stylishly comfortable bar and a cosy library, complete with a chaise longue, on the top floor.

Quinta do Estreito's situation makes it an ideal base for walkers and with this in mind there is a boot room complete with automatic cleaner. It is also a more than comfortable alternative for visitors wishing to be close to Funchal yet away from its bustle. Although useful for exploring, a hire car is not essential as the village is well served by bus and taxi and the hotel operates a daily minibus service into Funchal, as well as a courtesy bus to allow you dine in the other Charming Hotels. There is also a selection of local eateries, including one famous for its 'Espatada' (typically Madeirense skewered beef and fried maize), and for more choice the small coastal town and fishing harbour of Câmara de Lobos is just five minutes drive below.
