Just a short drive from the lively harbour town of Fethiye in one direction and the rather swish marina at Gocek in the other, The Bay is a small hotel with just 36 wooden bungalow style rooms set in extensive grounds on the shores of a secluded bay. The setting could not be more appealing, against a backdrop of dense pine forest, lawned gardens dotted with Sweet Gum trees and colourful shrubs and plants lead down to a beach, sometimes shared with families of preening ducks and amply provided with sunloungers and straw umbrellas.
Guests can relax by the large freeform pool or make use of the hammocks and easy chairs scattered around the grounds in shady spots, if the short stroll to the beach is all too much. For more active moments cycling, canoeing and windsurfing can be arranged and table tennis, mini-golf, billiards and giant chess are all on hand within the grounds. Those seeking a little pampering can visit the small sauna and spa, where massages can be arranged, and there is even a ladies' and gentlemen's hairdresser on site. Other facilities include a small shop catering for everyday needs and a laundry service.
The main Anchor Restaurant, set on platforms on the water's edge, makes a stunning setting for both breakfast and dinner and for a special treat the à la carte Limone Restaurant, tucked up on the hillside with a panoramic view of the bay, specialises in seafood. During the day the Sailor's Beach Bar serves snacks and drinks and the Forest Bar by the pool dispenses cooling drinks.
The majority of rooms are set in individual wooden bungalows, each with a covered and furnished terrace looking out across the gardens. As one would expect, they are all air-conditioned but more surprisingly for such a natural setting, they all have wireless internet connections and large flat screen televisions (mainly Turkish but some international channels). Minibars and hairdryers also come as standard and the well-appointed bathrooms are stocked with toiletries.
There are three different grades of rooms: Standard Rooms are 25-30 sqm with modern bath or shower rooms. Deluxe Rooms are 42-44 sqm, either with a separate lounge and bedroom or a spacious open-plan layout, and have Jacuzzi baths. Royal Suites are 77-86 sqm and comprise a lounge, two separate bedrooms and two bathrooms with Jacuzzi baths.
