Set in the heart of the maze of streets that make up the old quarter of Rethymnon, the Vecchio Hotel is a restored Venetian mansion, very much in keeping with its surroundings. The hotel is hidden behind a traditional arched doorway and is accessed via a charming plant-filled courtyard, which is also the location for the small swimming pool and a sunbathing area.
Although the hotel offers bed and breakfast, the rooms are actually studio rooms complete with a kitchenette with a two-ring hob and fridge thus enabling guests to make their own hot or cold drinks or prepare a light snack. Each of the twin-bedded studios is simply but adequately furnished and is air-conditioned (a small charge for this is payable locally). Each has a balcony facing the courtyard and naturally an en-suite shower room complete with a hair dryer.
The Vecchio's situation is ideal for city explorers and beach lovers alike as Rethymnon's vast expanse of sandy beach with its excellent facilities is just 700 metres away. For keen gastronauts there are any number of tavernas both in the old town and along the seafront promenade offering a variety of cuisines and there are enough shops of all types for anyone unable to resist their regular dose of retail therapy. Culture vultures also have plenty to explore on foot as in addition to the fascinating Venetian architecture in evidence everywhere, the impressive Fortezza, built at the end of the 16th century to defend against the pirates and the Ottomans, is a short stroll away as are both the fascinating archaeological and folklore museums.
The Vecchio Hotel offers a very affordable way of staying in this very sought after historic district with its combination of unique character and access to all the facilities of a modern beachside town.
