As Porto Santo's tourism industry is not yet fully developed, self-catering accommodation here is still frustratingly hard to come by, and individual houses for rent even more so. You can therefore imagine our excitement when the owner of Quinta de São João in Madeira casually mentioned to us that she not only had a summer house of her own in Porto Santo, but also a detached guest cottage in the grounds, which she was happy to make available to Cachet Travel guests. Villa Palmeira is situated right in the heart of the island's main village, Vila Baleira, and stands in delightfully mature gardens full of tall palm trees, from which it takes its name. Screened from the road by the main house, this very traditional cottage offers simple but charming accommodation. The layout is slightly idiosyncratic, with a long but narrow living room at the front of the house, two double bedrooms in the middle, and a kitchen and shower room at the rear. Needless to say, guests have full use of the extensive garden, an enchanting spot for relaxing with a good book or just sipping a few pre-dinner drinks.
The cottage's location could not be more convenient, as the island's stunning sandy beach is just a few minutes' walk away, and all the facilities of the village are also within easy walking distance. For those who wish to self-cater, there is a well-stocked supermarket no more than 5 minutes' walk away, whilst those who can't be bothered to cook will find a handful of cafés, bars and restaurants similarly close by. Those who wish to visit the rest of the island can hire bicycles, catch a local bus, make use of the local taxis or even pick up one of the horse-drawn carts from the seafront in front of the town hall.
Staying in your own cottage is the perfect way to enjoy Porto Santo's wonderfully laid-back atmosphere at its best, and early booking is highly recommended, especially if you plan to travel during high summer when the island is an extremely popular holiday choice for the Madeirans. Please note that we are not able to provide maid service during your stay here; however, the cottage will be thoroughly cleaned for your arrival, and sufficient towels and bedding will be provided for the length of your stay.
