When you step into the delightful art nouveau entrance hall of this charming
little city hotel it is hard to remember that you are in the twenty-first century.
The tiffany-style glass awning, gracefully curving balustrades and ornate
railings enclosing the galleried landing instantly transport you to the age of
elegance. Although it is only officially graded as a three-star establishment, as
it lacks such amenities as a swimming pool and gym, the furnishings and
ambience of the hotel are more than just comfortable.
Despite the charming echoes of a bygone era in the décor, the facilities are
completely up to date and each of the 50 en-suite rooms has air-conditioning,
telephone, television and video and a mini-bar. For a little extra luxury there
are six specious suites.
A cosy bar and tea terrace are very appealing for guests returning from
exploring, fishing or whale watching, as is the conveniently central location in
the heart of the old town. An advantage of the Talisman is that the area
immediately around the hotel is pedestrianised thus making it quieter than
some of the other city hotels.
The hotel's restaurant is popular with tourists and locals alike and fish,
seafood and the very special Azorean steaks are all imaginatively prepared
and generously served. As with most restaurants on the island, the value for
money is excellent by normal European standards and you can certainly push
the boat out without denting your wallet.
Guests seeking comfort, service and style in the heart of São Miguel
will be very hard pressed to find a better alternative than the Talisman.
