The small seaside settlements on the northern shores of Pico are popular
summer retreats for many Azoreans who wish to escape and enjoy the
attractive land and seascapes and spend their days swimming in the natural
rock pools, fishing and enjoying the extremely laid back lifestyle. Many of the
old houses have been attractively restored and are ideal for anyone seeking a
comfortable base and an authentic dose of Azorean life.
Casa da Adega, as its name implies, is set near vineyards on the hillside just
above the village of Prainha de Baixo. It is an idyllic detached hideaway for a
couple complete with good sea views and an extensive garden full of fruit
trees. On the ground floor there is an open plan living room and kitchenette
plus a shower room and the upper floor has a comfortable twin bedroom.
Nearer to the village, in its own walled garden is the larger Casa da Ladeira
dos Castanheiros a converted farmhouse with four bedrooms. During the
recent restoration the owner was keen to keep many of the original features
so the layout is slightly quirky with a farmhouse style kitchen and a dining
room on the upper floor, the four bedrooms and two bathrooms divided
between both floors and a comfortable sitting room on the ground floor.
Whilst the thick stone walls, polished wooden beams and antiques remind
guests of the house's age there are enough modern touches to make it an
extremely comfortable residence.
Prainha de Baixo has all the necessities of everyday life during the summer
months but during the low season it may be necessary to shop in São
Roque, which is just a short drive away.
