Good quality accommodation on Pico has always been somewhat limited so
we were delighted when we discovered the chic new Pochinho Bay Hotel.
Although not exactly designed for the more budget conscious traveller it
provides a level of style and comfort previously unknown on the island.
Just a few minutes drive from Madelena, the island's main town and port, and
a thirty minute drive from the island's small airport the small, Pochino Bay's
small stone buildings sit beside the ocean, with splendid views of the
neighbouring island of Faial, and are surrounded by the famous local
vineyards.
The traditional local stone architectural style of the buildings disguises the
thoroughly up to date level of comfort to be found in each of the six rooms,
which are scattered between the various buildings for maximum privacy.
Although the rooms all vary in terms of décor and layout each has well-
designed contemporary furniture, a modern fitted bathroom as well as a
minibar, safety deposit boxes, cable television, direct dial telephones and fax
and modem points. Luxury down duvets are provided for the cooler months
and there is a choice of equally stylish king or queen size beds or large twins.
The communal areas include a fresh-water pool and paved surround
furnished with loungers and umbrellas, a shaded chill-out area with
comfortable rattan seating and low slung hammocks from which to enjoy
views across the bay to the neighbouring island of Faial. In addition there is a
delightful breakfast room with one side completely open to the prettily
landscaped garden.
The Pochino Bay is an ideal retreat for those just wishing to idle their days
away as the natural beach is just a few steps from the property and the large
acreage of the estate provides some excellent walking trails but should guests
wish to venture further afield all sorts of natural pursuits, including whale
watching, swimming with dolphins and nature treks, can all be arranged.
