Spring in Crete is a magical time
when the profusion of wild flowers and abundance of migratory birds add an
extra dimension to the unspoilt countryside in the foothills of the omnipresent
mountains. Autumn should however not be overlooked as it heralds welcome
changes in the countryside and even some late flowering as nature recovers from
the long hot summer and, bathed by the much mellower sunlight, prepares itself
for the winter.
We are delighted that David
Reid, who recently retired from the Somerset Wildlife Trust and has spend a
good deal of time exploring Crete, has agreed to lead three more special weeks
for us, designed for those who wish to learn more about the flowers and birds
or even just appreciate the beauty of it all. He will again be accompanied by
his partner Felicity Smith, who will take care of many of the practical
details.
The exact itinerary will be dependant on what gems David discovers in
his preparatory weeks but will certainly take in many of the most scenic parts
of the island. There will naturally be some walking involved as the best birds
and flowers are not usually found by the roadside but there should be nothing
overly taxing for those with an average fitness level and a minibus will be used
to transport you to and from the areas to be visited each day.
Breakfast provisions will be
provided in your apartment, with regular top ups catering for any special
requirements, lunches will be varied between picnics and village taverna meals
and dinner, including some wine, will be provided in the tavernas close to both
properties.
You should come equipped for the weather conditions and
terrain and a list of suggested items to bring will be included in your final
documentation.
