Atlantida Apartments

Madeira and Porto SantoFunchal & South-East Madeira › Funchal

Situated in the heart of Funchal, these modern and comfortable studio apartments are ideal for independent-minded holiday makers seeking a central location.

Situated in the very centre of Funchal, the recently built Aparthotel Atlantida is perfect for independently minded guests looking for accommodation of an excellent modern standard but wishing to avoid the large hotels of the city's more touristy districts. The apartments stand in a side street just behind the municipal gardens, only 200 metres from the Cathedral, the marina and the lovely Saint Catherine's park. The surrounding streets are lined with a wide range of shops catering to the day to day needs of Madeirans and holidaymakers alike, and the nearby cafés, bars and restaurants attract plenty of local people, giving them a proper Funchalese atmosphere.

The Atlantida comprises approximately two dozen studios and apartments, all of which are comfortably furnished and stylishly decorated. The Standard Studios consist of a bedroom, an open-plan kitchenette and a smart marble bathrooms with hairdryer. Suitable for preparing simple meals and snacks, the kitchenettes come complete with a ceramic hob, a microwave oven, a fridge and even a dishwasher, and can be neatly concealed behind sliding doors when not in use. The Superior Studios are similar but more spacious and have a sitting area with a sofa that can be converted to accommodate a third person - please note that this is open-plan and not wholly separated from the sleeping area. Some of the Superior Studios also have a balcony (available at a supplement).

An optional buffet breakfast (payable locally) is served in the ground floor breakfast room for those who like the practicality of self-catering accommodation but don't actually wish to cook, and naturally there are plenty of other eating-places close by. Should you fancy the occasional dip, you could join the locals on one of the rocky town beaches or at the public swimming pools in the Quinta Magnolia gardens.

Part of the appeal of staying at the Atlantida is of course that most of Funchal's attractions can easily be reached on foot from here, and the local bus network allows you to explore further afield, but for those who do wish to hire a car - or plan to stay here as part of a fly-drive itinerary - there is an underground car park (a small charge of 5 euros per day is payable locally). As a comfortable base in convenient and authentic surroundings, the Atlantida would be hard to beat.
