Azmak River Cottage

TurkeyThe Datca and Loryma Peninsulas and Gulf of Gokova › Akyaka

A charming single-storey house set right beside the river on the outskirts of the laid-back beach resort of Akyaka, offering homely accommodation for couples and families alike.

Our favourite part of Akyaka is along the banks of the pretty stream that flows into the bay here, where we have spent many enjoyable lunchtimes in one of the laid-back restaurants, relaxing in the shade of the eucalyptus trees, feasting on fresh trout and dipping our toes in the river for welcome refreshment. We are therefore delighted to be able to offer Cachet Travel clients this charming single-storey property which is peacefully situated right by the river, yet also just a short walk from Akyaka's shops, restaurants, beach and other facilities, so the location is as convenient as it is idyllic.

The house is very traditional in appearance, with its octagonal shapes, dark-wood window frames and pan-tiled roofs, reflecting the typical Ugla-Mugla style of this region. The house wasn't purposely built for holiday lets but has been a family home for many years, so the interiors are homely and quirky rather than modern and minimalist. From the main entrance at the back of the house you enter a small corridor, with the kitchen on your left-hand side (with fridge-freezer, four-ring gas hob, microwave oven, dishwasher and a kettle) and a shower room on your right-hand-side. Straight ahead is the octagonal living room, which is not just the hub of the home, leading to all the other rooms, but also very much its heart, with comfortable sofas, a working fireplace, a large flat-screen satellite TV (limited English language channels) and an impressive Ottoman-style wooden ceiling rising to four-and-a-half metres in the centre. The main bedroom has a double bed and its own en suite shower room, and there are two further bedrooms, one with a single bed, the other with twin beds. There is also a small conservatory-style sitting area, forming the link between the house and the delightful gardens.

Shaded by fragrant eucalyptus trees and lapped by the crystal-clear waters of the river, Azmak's grounds are a haven for relaxation-seekers. A spacious terrace for al-fresco dining borders the house, whilst next to there river there is a beautiful decking area with comfortable seating, perfect for losing yourself in a good book, or just in peaceful contemplation. Azmak's owners live in the house next door but are never intrusive, and whilst the grounds are shared between the two houses, guests in Azmak Cottage have the exclusive use of the terraces and decking area.
