Madeira and Porto SantoFunchal & South-East Madeira › Funchal

A charming and comfortable house with its own swimming pool, situated in the elevated residential area of Livramento.

Dating back to 1880, Casa Belflores is situated just below Quinta d'Alegria, and thus benefits from the same panoramic outlook over the whole bay of Funchal. The house is tucked away just off the Camino de Monte, along which pass the characteristic wicker toboggans, and stands in wonderfully mature gardens full of orange, lemon and avocado trees, as well as banana plants and a colourful collection of unusual flowers, creepers and shrubs. The private pool is located in a very sheltered location in the upper part of the garden - a real sun-trap as the white garden walls reflect the sun all around the surrounding patio.

Originally restored a few years back, the house itself has also seen further enhancements over the past year, as Joy has fitted a brand-new kitchen complete with a full cooker, a fridge-freezer, a dishwasher and a microwave oven, as well as all the utensils required for proper self-catering. The lounge has an open fireplace, a TV with cable connection a VCR and a CD player, and there is a separate dining room. Upstairs, you will find three bedrooms (one double, one twin and one with a single bed), a full bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe, whilst downstairs there is an additional shower room and a laundry room with a washing machine and iron/ironing board.

Although not quite as grand and opulent as Quinta d'Alegria, Casa Belflores provides comfortable, well-furnished accommodation of a high standard, and its many original features, such as partially exposed stone walls, timbered ceilings and quaint internal window shutters, lend the interiors an irresistible old-world charm.

Whilst a hire car would of course be useful for those who wish to explore the width and breadth of the island at their own pace, it is by no means a necessity here, as Livramento is served by a reliable bus service which departs every 30 minutes during the day and takes just 10 minutes to reach the centre of Funchal. There is also a taxi rank close by, whilst on foot, the steep descent to the town centre can be accomplished in around 30 minutes. For those nights when you would prefer to stay closer to home, there are three local restaurants within a ten-minute walk, as are two small corner shops where you can buy basic supplies including fresh bread for breakfast.
