Caserio de la Hondura

The Canary IslandsLa Gomera › Alajeró

A large and exceptionally well appointed cottage with spectacular views, in a secluded setting halfway between the national park and the south coast.

Offering a wonderfully secluded yet convenient setting, spectacular ocean and mountain views, and a standard of accommodation rarely found in rural self-catering cottages on La Gomera, this delightful property is bound to prove popular with discerning travellers. Caserio de la Hondura stands approximately one mile south of the village of Alajero, within the grounds of a large organic farm where avocados, figs and other fruit are cultivated. There are no close neighbours within sight or earshot, and yet the closest restaurant is just 800 metres away, and there are a couple of others in Alajero, together with small shops for essential day-to-day purchases. The small south-coast beach resort of Playa Santiago is just 8 km away, whilst in the opposite direction it takes just 15 minutes by car to reach the start of the Garajonay National Park in the centre of the island. The island capital San Sebastian with its larger supermarkets and more comprehensive range of facilities is just over half-an-hour's drive away.

Although Caserio de la Hondura is of recent construction, it has been carefully designed to reflect the island's traditional architecture, both in its elegant proportions and in its use of materials, including reclaimed wood and natural stone from nearby derelict properties. Whilst this lends the house a certain period charm, the accommodation has been finished to an excellent standard, putting it in a class of its own amongst other local holiday homes.

T the sleek modern kitchen, which occupies the single-storey stone-built wing, is particularly impressive, as are the stylish bathrooms with their granite tiles. The kitchen is fully fitted with a complete range of quality appliances including a 4-ring gas hob, built-in microwave and conventional ovens, large fridge-freezers, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, and plenty of cupboard space for storing the kitchen equipment, as well as worktops for using it! The main wing of the house is on two levels, with the ground floor comprising a spacious living-dining room and a large double bedroom with its own bathroom and terrace. Wooden stairs lead from the lounge area to the upper floor where there are two further double bedrooms, each with splendid views of the majestic Tagaragunche mountain and down towards the coast and ocean, as well as another bathroom with Jacuzzi bathtub. The house has free WiFi, and there is also a safety deposit box.

A hire car is automatically included in the cost of your holiday to enable you to explore the island and to visit the restaurants down on the coast or in the nearby villages, but with such a splendid setting and well-equipped kitchen, you may well prefer to stock up on groceries at the start of your holiday in order to cook and dine at home, and to enjoy the stunning views from Caserio de la Hondura's terraces.
