The Canary IslandsLa Palma › Los Canarios (Fuencaliente)

This cluster of prettily furnished terraced cottages overlooks the volcano of San Antonio and benefits from a covered swimming pool

Boasting the island's most fascinating volcanic scenery, La Palma's southernmost municipality, Fuencaliente, consists of several small villages and hamlets. This cluster of nine delightful cottages stands on the edge of the main village, Los Canarios, which is an authentic and pleasantly self-contained sort of place with a handful of charming restaurants and cafés and sufficient shops for your basic day-to-day needs.

The appeal of this location is twofold - on the one hand, the village centre is just a short walk uphill from here, so that you needn't rely on your hire car to venture out for dinner; on the other hand, the cottages afford a perfect view of the distinctive cone of the San Antonio volcano, one of the island's top attractions, which lies just below. On clear days, the panoramic views enjoyed from this elevated setting extend across the ocean to the islands of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro.

The cottages themselves are no less appealing than their location. Prettily designed and finished to an excellent standard, each comprises a living-dining room with satellite TV; an open-plan kitchen with ceramic hob, fridge, toaster and coffeemaker; a bedroom with twin beds and a modern shower room with hairdryer.

Handsome pitched wooden ceilings in the traditional style of the island, mellow terracotta floor tiles and tastefully chosen wood and wrought-iron furnishings lend the interiors a real home-from-home charm, and each cottage also benefits from its own spacious terrace or garden, facing south across the volcano towards the ocean.

The same splendid panorama can be enjoyed from the property's swimming pool, which is enclosed by a conservatory so that it can be used all year round - as the village of Los Canarios stands nearly 700 m above sea-level, it is often a little cooler here than down on the coast. That said, the volcanic beaches and coves of the south-west coast - statistically one of the sunniest parts of the island - can easily be reached using your complimentary car. The nearest, Playa de la Zamora, is approximately 6km away.

Next to the pool, there is a fitness area with a selection of exercise machines, although most guests will probably prefer to get their daily exercise by exploring the island on foot, and even the those who don't consider themselves serious walkers should at least undertake the walk along the rim of the San Antonio crater, for the views are spectacular, and the adjoining visitor centre is very informative.
