We were particularly delighted when we were asked to include the Epavlis Suites in our programme. Agios Myronas, set in the fertile countryside just south of Heraklion, has long been a favourite village of ours, and accommodation of the standard of Epavlis has never been available in the area before.
The owner Stelios and his wife Stella, who hails from the village, have created the sort of retreat they dreamt of during their years living abroad and have even reserved one of the five suites for their own personal use. Everything has been planned and designed to the highest standard with peace, seclusion and pampering in mind. There is even a private spa room where a range of treatments can be arranged. The garden area incorporates a large swimming pool, with an L shaped area equipped with relaxing massage jets. The sun terraces have wonderful views across the valley, with its attractive patchwork of fields, and there are outdoor and indoor dining areas where guests can enjoy the vista as well as the freshly cooked food, although the restaurant does not open every day.
Each of the four suites has been equipped and furnished to give an extremely comfortable and luxurious feel and, in contrast to the traditional rural location, modern technology, in the form of 20 inch plasma screens, wireless laptop computers and state of the art CD players, has been incorporated into the design.
On the first floor of the building is the spacious Rafkas Balcony Suite. At the entrance to the suite is a kitchen and dining area and a few steps then lead up the comfortable living area, complete with a working fireplace and a balcony with views down to the sea. Just off the dining area there is a large bathroom with a corner bath and a spacious shower room and a small study, which can be used as a bedroom. In addition there is a master bedroom complete with a balcony with mountain views.
Downstairs three further suites, The House of Flowers, The House of Eros and the House of Angels are all furnished and equipped in a similar style but vary slightly in terms of size and layout and do not have a study, just a living room and bedroom. Each has a generous outside sitting area with valley and sea views.
Epavlis is 5 minutes' drive from the village centre, where there is a taverna and few shops for all the normal day to day needs, and just half an hour's drive from the island's busy capital. It is an ideal retreat for anyone seeking a comfortable and peaceful country house atmosphere within easy striking distance of beaches, Minoan sites and even the island's main golf course.
