Finca Wapa

The Canary IslandsEl Hierro › Near Las Puntas

A cluster of self-catering apartments set in pretty gardens close to the sea in a convenient location for exploring the whole island

Situated at the eastern end of the El Golfo valley, Finca Wapa is a former pineapple plantation which now comprises six charming holiday apartments set across several small buildings. Just to the east, the small coastal settlement of Las Puntas is a lovely spot for line-fishing or just marvelling at the waves crashing against the rugged coastline, whilst to the west, it takes just a few minutes by car to reach the joint-up villages of Frontera/Tigaday, the valley's main population centre, with a selection of bars and restaurants, a handful of shops and one of the island's three petrol stations! Roughly halfway between Finca Wapa and Valverde, you will find the Ecomuseo de Guinea with its collection of reconstructed houses representing the lifestyle of the islanders over time, and the Lagartario, a recuperation centre for the Giant Lizard of El Hierro. This indigenous species had been deemed extinct, until it was discovered that a few of these creatures, which grow up to 45 cm in length, had survived on a remote outcrop, which led to a programme of nurture, breeding and release into a supervised reserve. The natural seawater pools at La Maceta are also close by, although swimming here is not recommended at high tide, and using the new tunnel road, the island capital Valverde is approximately 15 km away, all of which makes Finca Wapa an ideal choice for those wishing to explore as much of the island as possible.

The six holiday homes are all different in size, layout and style. All offer simple but practical accommodation with a few charming personal touches. The finca's owners live on the ground floor of the main building, so they are on hand to provide any necessary assistance. One the upper floor of the main building, the Apartment Mayor boasts its own terrace with lovely sea views. It comprises a bedroom with double bed, a spacious living room and open-plan kitchen (with full-size cooker and fridge-freezer), and a large bathroom with bathtub. Next door is the compact Studio 1 with twin beds and a shower room. As this studio only has a fridge, but no cooking facilities, it is best suited for parties renting the Apartment Mayor and requiring additional sleeping accommodation. Situated to the rear of the main building, Studio 2 is similar but has a double bed.

Casa Bahia is a detached cottage in the gardens with a double bedroom, a shower room, a living room with sofa-bed, an open-plan kitchenette and a furnished terrace. Just the other side of a small vegetable garden, Casa Finca is similar to Casa Bahia but has an additional bedroom with twin beds, making it suitable for families. Casa Rustica is a detached cottage set in its own small walled garden next to the finca's entrance, with a double bedroom, shower room and living room with open-plan kitchenette.

Within the grounds of the finca, there is a communal al-fresco dining area with a barbecue. It should be noted that, due to the majestic mountains to the east and south, the property lies in the shade until late morning during the winter months, although conversely it benefits fully from the evening sun and enjoys lovely sunset views.
