Hotel Boutique Casa Vieja

The Canary IslandsFuerteventura › La Oliva

This charming small hotel, converted from a traditional Canarian manor house, is well placed for exploring the island and accessing the northern beaches by car

Situated between the inland villages of La Oliva and Villaverde, this lovely small hotel was created in 2007 from a derelict, 100-year old manor house. Great care was taken during the restoration to retain the building's traditional architectural features and typical Canarian charm, whilst creating surprisingly spacious accommodation with a thoroughly up-to-date level of comfort.

The hotel comprises 10 guestrooms, set around two courtyards. All are actually Junior Suites with a double bed, a comfortable sitting area, and a good-size bathroom with hydro-massage bath. Whilst the wooden floors, ceilings and windows are typically Canarian, all the furnishings were imported from India - an unexpected yet entirely successful marriage of styles. Facilities in the rooms include satellite TV (limited English-language channels), direct-dial telephones, hairdryers and safety-deposit boxes (local charge applies).

Whilst the rooms do not have individual balconies or terraces, there is plenty of space for relaxing in the grounds, from the shaded terrace adjoining the main building with its comfortable outdoor sofas to the pretty courtyards. The large sun terrace that surrounds the enticing swimming pool is well stocked with wooden sun-loungers and parasols.

The communal areas inside are just as appealing. The main hall incorporates the reception area, a comfortable lounge area and a small bar, and leads through to the hotel's cosy restaurant, La Casa Vieja. With its pitched wooden ceiling and rustic decor, this provides a charming setting for char-grilled meats and other home-cooked evening meals. In the mornings, a continental breakfast buffet is laid out, whilst eggs are cooked to order on request.

Between them, the neighbouring villages of La Oliva and Villaverde boast several other restaurants within a 2-km radius, so you don't have to travel too far if you fancy a change of menu or surroundings for dinner. Further afield, the bustling beach resort of Corralejo is roughly 15 minutes' drive away and boasts a full range of shops, bars, restaurants and other tourist facilities, as well as the port for day trips to Lanzarote or the tiny island of Lobos. Just outside Corralejo lie the magnificent white-sand beach and dunes of Grandes Playas, whilst a 15-minute drive west from the hotel takes you to the fishing village of El Cotillo with its unspoilt beaches.
