Quinta Mirabela

Madeira and Porto SantoFunchal & South-East Madeira › Funchal

This small and stylish boutique hotel offers contemporary interiors, gastronomic delights and magnificent views over Funchal

Offering striking interiors, gastronomic delights and magnificent views over the Bay of Funchal, Quinta Mirabela will appeal to guests who value the intimacy and personal ambience of a traditional Madeiran Quinta, but who prefer a more contemporary alternative to the "olde-worlde" country-house style generally favoured by other such establishments.

The original manor house retains its graceful Georgian proportions from the outside, but inside it has been transformed into a celebration of avant-garde design, with clean lines and uncluttered spaces creating a very restful environment.

There are just 24 guestrooms, all with panoramic views across the city to the ocean, and the Superior Rooms in the new wing have their own balconies or terraces. Although not huge, they are extremely comfortable and stylish, and come equipped with all the latest 5-star comforts, including marble bathrooms with hairdryers and bathrobes, individually controlled heating/air-conditioning units, minibars, direct dial telephones, Bang & Olufsen TVs and safety deposit boxes. Non-smoking rooms and rooms with double beds are available on request.

Quinta Mirabela stands in an elevated position approximately 3 km from the centre of Funchal, next to the famous Caminho do Monte, the steep lane used for the wicker toboggan run. In the days before cars, buses and the cable car made the village of Monte easily accessible, the Quinta became famous as a tea house thanks to its location "halfway", refreshing such dignitaries as King Humberto of Italy and Don Juan de Bourbon, father of King Juan Carlos of Spain.

Today, it is still a popular spot for taking afternoon tea (in fact, the Tea Club of Madeira holds its meetings here), but perhaps even more worthy of mention are the culinary treats served for lunch and dinner in the sophisticated atmosphere of the hotel's "O Refúgio do Monte" restaurant.

Any excess calories can be burnt off in the small but well equipped gym, or with a few lengths in the heated swimming pool, which is bordered by a panoramic sunbathing terrace. For those who prefer gentle pampering, the spa area incorporates a Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, and massage treatments can also be arranged.

For guests planning on hiring their own transport, the hotel has its own underground car park, whilst for those who prefer not to drive it operates a complimentary minibus to the town centre twice a day. The local bus between Monte and Funchal stops reasonably close by, and naturally taxis can easily be summoned.

Its unique design and ambience have quickly established Quinta Mirabela as one of the chicest places to stay on Madeira, and we are delighted to be the first tour operator to feature it in the British market.
