Luz Playa Studios

The Canary IslandsGran Canaria › Las Palmas

Ideal for independent-minded travellers, these newly renovated studios offer bright and modern accommodation with superb views over the beach of Las Canteras in the island capital Las Palmas.

Situated directly on the palm-fringed promenade that runs along the long sandy beach Playa de las Canteras, these attractive studios are ideal for independent minded holidaymakers wishing to enjoy all that Gran Canaria's vibrant capital has to offer, without being constrained by set hotel mealtimes when planning the day's activities. As the ninth-largest city in Spain, and an important trading port, Las Palmas is a busy, bustling kind of place that easily absorbs travellers from all over Europe. Even along Las Canteras, which is understandably the city's most popular area amongst holidaymakers seeking to escape the harsh winters of northern Europe, tourists never seem to outnumber the locals in the many cafés and restaurants.

Fully refurbished in July 2015, the twenty studios are situated at the front of the building and each has a west-facing balcony with lovely views across the promenade and beach to the ocean (there are also a number of apartments with a separate bedroom at the rear of the building, but these have no balconies or views). Inside, the studios are bright and airy, with modern furnishings and contemporary decor. Each has twin beds arranged side by side and a sofa that can accommodate a third person, Satellite TV (with limited English-language channels), a safety deposit box (local charge applies) and free WiFi. The bathrooms have hairdryers, and each studio has a small open-plan kitchenette equipped with a fridge, two-ring hob, toaster and coffeemaker. Whilst the self-catering facilities are adequate for preparing breakfast and simple meals, we doubt that any guests would wish to attempt any more elaborate cooking, as there are so tempting restaurants, tapas bars and cafés close by. Even for breakfast, you may prefer to just pick up some fresh pastries from one of the local bakeries on your way back form your morning swim.

The six-storey building is served by a lift, but as there is a short flight of stairs leading up from street level to the entrance and reception, the accommodation is not suitable for wheelchair users. Please also note that, as the entrance is located on the pedestrianised promenade, your airport transfer will need to drop you off on the nearest corner. For those who do intend to hire a car to explore the rest of the island at their leisure, guests at Luz Playa can use a nearby car park (5 minutes' walk away) at the discounted rate of €8 per day. That said, we would expect that most guests staying here would choose to explore the city's attractions on foot or by bus or taxi, and also use the public bus network to venture out into the countryside and visit some of the island's picturesque smaller towns and villages.
