Quinta d'Alegria

Madeira and Porto SantoFunchal & South-East Madeira › Funchal

Beautifully restored, this former wine mearchants home in the charming neighbourhood of Livramento offers spacious accommodation full of character and a heatable swimming pool.

Villas with private swimming pools in Madeira - let alone Funchal - are a very rare species indeed, so we consider ourselves extremely fortunate to be able to offer our guests this stunning and rather luxurious period house. Quinta d'Alegria has been restored from the former home of a Victorian wine merchant and is situated in a residential district midway between Monte and Funchal.

Guests relaxing on the sunny lawns, on the terrace or in the shade of the old Casa de Fresco (summerhouse) can watch the wicker toboggans as they glide down the lane. Camelia, avocado and palm trees surround the lawns and there is also a vegetable patch yielding fresh seasonal produce. The pool is situated below the house and the surrounding terrace commands a truly fabulous view over the town to the ocean beyond. There is also a charming al fresco dining area, complete with portable barbecue, to one side of the well-equipped modern kitchen and separate laundry room.

A small conservatory now forms the main entrance and leads to a large living room complete with an open stone fireplace, cable TV and DVD player, and a dining area comfortably and tastefully furnished in old colonial style as befits a house of its age. The upper floor has three bedrooms, two doubles and one twin, each with attractive vaulted ceilings and windows giving a panoramic view of Funchal. The two bathrooms each have a bath as well as a shower cabin and vanity unit plus a bidet and WC.

Just along the steep lane beside the house is a small bar, often frequented by the straw-hatted toboggan drivers, and just a little further afield there is a cafe/bakery and a couple of shops and restaurants. There is a taxi rank and bus stop nearby although the walk down to the cathedral in Funchal takes just thirty minutes and the toboggan ride much less.

Please note that pool heating during the winter months (October to April) is an optional extra charged at 50 euro per week. This is payable locally but must be requested at the time of booking.
